Why skip tooth on a long bar

A skip-tooth loop leaves out every other cutter. On a 24- or 28-inch bar that means fewer teeth fighting the wood at once, more room for chips to clear the kerf and less load on the engine. It is the chain we send for big hardwood and long bucking cuts.

Ripping chain is a different tool

Our 36-inch ripping chain has its cutters ground at a shallower angle for cutting along the grain, the way an Alaskan-style mill slices boards. It is slow and rough for cross-cutting, and excellent for what it is made for.
